With Google I/O now just around the corner, rumors are flying high and low about what we can expect. On the table is a Google Nexus 5, Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie and a next-gen Google Nexus 7 tablet.
Last week we tried to clear things up about the Google Nexus 5 rumors and explain that while the Google I/O is a main event, it was unrealistic to expect a Google Nexus 5. The Nexus smartphone has always launched closer to the holidays so we won’t be seeing a new Nexus smartphone just 6 months since the Nexus 4 hit the market. What is more likely is a 2013 Google Nexus 7 tablet.
So how about the OS? Can we expect the long rumored Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie? Right until last week I would have said yes but things changed two days ago.
Just before the weekend we saw Gmail 4.3 released. If you keep track of version numbers you will be aware than Gmail 4.2 leaked a few weeks before Android 4.2 Jelly Bean was announced and the same can be said about Gmail 4.1 and 4.1 Jelly Bean.
As such I’m now expecting to see Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and a new Nexus tablet at Google I/O, if anything. Of course just because it is the same dessert doesn’t mean we can’t hope for major new features.
